Dry eyes are one of the most common side effects after LASIK, and they can be disconcerting just when you were hoping to stop relying on glasses<\/strong>. Here we explain why it happens, how long it usually lasts and when it’s worth seeing someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dry eye after laser eye surgery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Laser surgery usually corrects errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, but dry eye is one of its most common side effects and takes many people by surprise. It’s worth clarifying that in most cases it’s temporary and manageable, and doesn’t usually mean something went wrong. Even so, the risk and the course depend on the technique (LASIK, PRK or SMILE) and on the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it happens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To reshape the cornea, and depending on the chosen technique, the surgery can affect part of the nerves on the eye’s surface for a time. This can reduce the eye’s sensitivity and disrupt the reflexes that make it produce tears and blink. The result is that you sense the dryness less and lubricate less. While the surface heals, the tear film can become more unstable and irritation can appear. If the discomfort is far greater than what the examination shows, there may also be pain coming from the nerve involvement, which is worth assessing (checking the eye’s surface before surgery helps choose the right candidates).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long it lasts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In many patients, the dryness is most noticeable during the first few weeks and improves gradually as the ocular surface heals and the corneal nerves recover. Symptoms often ease considerably over the first three to six months, though there’s variability and in some people they can persist longer; not all procedures have the same prognosis. In a small number of people the dryness persists and needs active treatment and follow-up. Managing it usually starts with the same treatments used for other types of dry eye, though obviously adapted to each case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
