Why a dry-eye check is different

A standard eye test is designed to measure how well you see and to screen for conditions like glaucoma. What it doesn’t really do is measure your tears – and that’s why so many people are told their eyes are “fine” while they carry on burning, watering and feeling gritty. A dry-eye assessment is a different appointment, aimed squarely at your tear film and the meibomian glands behind it.

What happens at the appointment

It’s more thorough than a routine check, but nothing about it is uncomfortable. Typically it involves:

• A conversation: your symptoms, when they’re worst, your general health and any medications – often with a short questionnaire to score how much they affect you.
• A surface exam: a close look with a microscope and harmless dyes that reveal dry spots and show how quickly the tear film breaks up.
• Meibography: a painless infrared image of the meibomian glands hidden inside your eyelids.
• Tear measurements: how much tear you have, how fast it evaporates, and how concentrated it has become.

It’s quick and comfortable

None of this involves needles or anything that hurts – it’s entirely non-invasive. The whole point is simply to build a clear, complete picture of what’s driving your symptoms, so nothing is left to guesswork.

How to prepare

A little preparation makes the results more accurate:

• Skip eye drops for a few hours beforehand, unless you’ve been told otherwise.
• Come without eye make-up.
• Leave your contact lenses out ahead of the appointment.
• Bring a list of your medications.
